Where on Google Earth: Number 601

Today, I was lucky enough to recognise Twitter user @_gizmo_'s contribution to the ongoing series "Where on Google Earth" .
For a brief moment I basked in the glory of victory, before realising that I had just been landed with the task of finding a follow-up image for the competition.
This afternoon, after a very long struggle with Google Earth (during which I was so absorbed, that Cath mowed the front lawn without my noticing), I found that almost all my ideas were likely to be either ridiculously easy, or completely impossible.
However, eventually I came up with the view above. Clue: the view is approximately 50km wide. Also it features a place of considerable geological interest.
If nobody guesses it, more clues will be provided via Twitter @FaithfullJohn

@_gizmo_ Here again! It's the Atacama desert. 27Deg, 44Min south, 70Deg 32 Min west. :-) It's the driest place on the planet, but couldn't dig out the geological interest angle. Would love to hear about it in detail!

Delete@_gizmo_ here. I can only see some very attractive rainbow mountains in the east of the image and a deep mine. Also know that there is a disproportionate abundance of nitrates in the area, normally depleted in the crust, that was thought to have come from the ocean spray/fog onto the plateau, but has since from geochemical signatures found to come from groundwater percolating up through the crust. :-)
